Under 14 B League Castlemartyr 01 - 04 Na Piarsaighs 02 - 02 On Saturday evening Na Piarsaighs made the trip to East Cork for the penultimate game in the league. Abundant sunshine greeted the teams as they lined out in what was expected to be a hard physical game. After Na Piarsaighs managed a couple of wides early on Castlemartyr won a free close to the sideline on the 45 and Aisling stepped up and cooly slotted it over the bar to get the first score of the match. Seven minutes later after a great run and offload from Cloadagh Mulhare, Aimee Morgan gathered the ball and made a bee line for goal with acres of space before her. She teed up her shot and let fly and the ball soared over the bar to double our advantage. There were a lot of battles going on all over the field with only a few scoring chances being created by either side. It was the visitors who got the next two scores, a point and a scrambled goal, which left us trailing by 2 points going into the break. After the girls had a well deserved rest and took on some liquids, the team line up was rejigged with Caoilfhionn making way for Kelsie Asamoah and Aisling switching with Lilly McElhinney. From the throw in Castlemartyr were on the attack. After great work from Zara Bowles the ball was sent in towards Na Piarsaighs goal and with sublime skill from Ellie McKenzie it was flicked on to the back of the net. This gave the girls a great boost and they redoubled their efforts. Na Piarsaighs were not to be outdone and again raised the green flag 8 minutes later to restore their 2 point lead. As the game progressed the heat began to take its toll on both teams and a lot of free space began opening up all over the pitch. Aisling reacted quickly to a loose ball and stormed down the wing toward the end line. From a very acute angle she sent her shot goal ward and unbelievably sent it straight between the posts. This was soon added to by Zara after more good work from Mia Burke and Lucy Kenneally who had been promoted to mid field for the game. This had the game all square with about 7 minutes to play as Meadhbh McCarthy was brought on for Lilly McElhinney. Castlemartyr were on the attack again and had a glorious opportunity to take the lead but the chance went a begging. Na Pairsaighs countered and scored a point of their own. With huge credit to our girls they didn't panic and went straight up the pitch again and created a number of chances resulting in two wides in quick succession. But as the ball was pucked out again the referee blew the final whistle to the huge relief to the visitors. It was a game that could have gone either way and a result that hinged on a few wayward decisions. With this their only loss in the league, their final game against Douglas will prove to be pivotal in progressing to the county quarter finals.
