U13s HAVE THE PERFECT START

U13 Imokilly Summer League Killeagh 02 - 01. Castlemartyr 03 - 06 On Sunday last we travelled the short distance to Killeagh for the opening game in the U13 Imokilly Summer League. In contrast to the previous day the sun shone which gave the girls perfect conditions to show off their skills. With Killeagh only able to field a team of 12 girls we were spoilt for choice as we had a squad of 21 girls from which to pick our starting team. With the decisions made, the first group of girls lined out to face their near rivals. Killeagh decided to play against the light breeze in the first half. Within the first minute Aimee Morgan had found the back of the host's net after sending a fine shot goalwards. Lilly McElkinney, Yvonne Abernethy and Chloe O'Dwyer were doing a fantastic job in the middle of the field working hard for every ball and not allowing the Killeagh players time to settle. Caoimhe Murphy and Ellie Mckenzie in defence dealt well with Killeagh's advances. Over the next 15 minutes Aimee added another two points before Killeagh struck and found the back of the net. As we continued to use our extensive bench the shape of the game changed over the course of the half and each girl contributed to the excellent display. Aimee added another 2 points to her tally, one from a free, and ever dependable Lia Hipwell brought off a couple of fine saves to have us leading 1 goal and 4 points to Killeagh's single goal at the break. With another change of personnel the second half began with Killeagh having the benefit of the strengthening breeze. Our full forward line was now made up of our u11s, Millie Bowles and Muireann Coughlan and our half forward line consisted of our u12s, Aisling Lewis and Juliet Cahill. It wasn't long before Millie had gotten her name on the score sheet with a brilliantly taken point after great work by Juliet 2 minutes after the restart. This was quickly followed a minute later by a brilliantly taken goal by Yvonne. Killeagh mounted attacks of their own and were rewarded with a point from a 45 and then a goal of their own. Our midfielders continued to work tirelessly with Alicia gathering a lot of loose ball and after one of her solo runs right into the heart of Killeagh's defence, delicately hand passed the sliotar over the bar to increase Castlemartyr's lead. As the final changes were made Meadhbh McCarthy was introduced into the forward line. Killeagh kept up the pressure and Lia was again called upon to make some very important stops with Ellie and Caoimhe making very effective clearances. In the final minute of the game we were on the attack again and Meadhbh gathered the ball and cooly slotted it home to raise the green flag for the final time. The encounter was brought to a close shortly after that and the girls were overjoyed with the win. It was a great performance from everyone, a little bit of a logistical nightmare trying to have every girl get their time on the pitch but whenever called upon every one of the girls slotted in perfectly and seamlessly kept the momentum going.
