HEARTACHE FOR U16s

U16 C County Semi Final Castlemartyr 03 - 03 St. Catherines 02 - 07 Although the lights shone brightly in Ballynoe on tonight it was to be the last game for Castlemartyr Camogie for 2017. Our exceptional u16 team bowed out in the penultimate round of the championship losing out by the smallest margin possible. We started brightly with Aimee Morgan opening the scoring with a well taken point. It wasn't long before St. Catherines equalised. And then after Sadhbh Beausang had her attack on goal blocked, our opposition went one better and registered their first goal. Aimee added a second point before Clodagh Mulhare added a third. St Catherines began to put their stamp on the game and added another 4 points without reply to leave the score 0-3 to 1-05 at the break. We started the second half much stronger and it wasn't long before we had raised the green flag after a free expertly taken by Aisling Murphy found its way all the way to the net. We were camped in our oppositions half for the opening part of the second half with a lot of the possession but chances weren't converted. A point resulted from St. Catherines first attack on our goal but after a series of well executed passes we scored our second goal to draw the game. A light drizzle began to fall as more pressure was mounted on our defence. Ellen Hayes Nally, between the posts, had to be sharp to deny St Catherines on a couple of occasions. But despite our best efforts they did manage to put the ball over the bar to go a point ahead. After good defensive efforts by Caoilfhionn Barry we managed to regain possession and put pressure on the hosts goal once more. After a shot on goal was saved and a chance by Zara Bowles went astray we regained possession once more and were rewarded with our third goal of the match giving us a 2 point advantage. Now heading to injury time the pressure was being felt by all. The rain was getting heavier and with underfoot conditions getting slippery injuries began to befall girls on both sides. After one of these incidents St Catherines were awarded a 20m free and as a result scored their 2nd goal. There was still little time left to play and we were unlucky not to score as a shot from Clodagh rebounded from the crossbar. But time had run out for our girls and as the final whistle sounded it was heartbreaking to realise how close we came to a place in the County Final.
