Castlemartyr Camogie Summer Camp

Excitement has been building all week for our much anticipated annual Camogie Summer Camp where our future stars from U6 to U13 get to experience two days filled with fun and frolics. For the past number of weeks our committee members and volunteers have been beavering away behind the scenes organising assistants, coordinators and supervisors to ensure the smooth running of the camp. Thanks to all the local businesses for their contributions towards the camp and special thanks to our club sponsors Castle Pharmacy for sponsoring our much sought after camp training tops.

Beginning on Friday morning we welcomed nearly seventy girls including our own members, members from neighbouring clubs, and non members to Paddy Walsh Memorial Park. With eyes nervously looking to the skies we were hopeful of two sunshine filled days and, with the exception of a couple of squalls early on Friday morning, we weren't disappointed. We are so lucky to have such great facilities available to us to provide the space, equipment and infrastructure needed so all age groups can get the individual attention they require.

Cork stars and local heroes Chloe Lane and Ciarán Joyce joined us on Friday to give us the benefit of their vast experience and put the girls through their paces in very enjoyable and beneficial training sessions. They gave their time so graciously and selflessly and spent a long time signing hurleys, jerseys and all manner of objects. We are so grateful to have such wonderful role models in our community.

Special mention for Chloe who after leaving us on Friday afternoon, headed straight to Thurles to take up her regular position between the posts with the Cork Camogie Minor Team in the Munster Final which Cork subsequently won, beating Tipperary by a comfortable four point margin!

The camp continued on Saturday with even more girls attending, and again each group were given loads of intensive and individualised sessions appropriate to their age and abilities rotating between our coaching teams each hour.

Highlights of Saturday included balloon target practice with each age group getting a selection of balloons to burst with the successful player winning a prize hidden within the balloon. During lunch, much to the excitement of everyone, we were visited by the obligatory ice cream van so everyone got a well deserved cooling treat!

Huge thanks to our camp participants, committee members, volunteers, coaches and assistants who made our camp such an enjoyable and successful couple of days. We have to give a very special mention to all our helpers from our U14 to minor teams who contributed so much to the success of the camp!

We’re already looking forward to next year’s camp!
